Wedding Ring Glows In Black Light?

25 April 2009 2 Comments

My wife and I just got married last week. On our amazing honeymoon we were killing time waiting for our reservations at Texas De Brazil. We decided to tone it down after a week at Disney and tried glow in the dark mini golf. During the game we noticed that her wedding ring, a 16 diamond interlocking ring from Kay jewlers had about 2 diamonds that appeared white or glowing in the black lights. Anyone know why or if this means they are fake?

Fluorescence (the glowing) is from tiny traces of boron in the stone. It’s actually considered to be a good thing. It would be especially cool if all her stones had equal fluorescence, but it’s no big deal that they don’t. It just means that two of the stones have boron, and the rest don’t.
Don’t worry, her diamonds are real!

PP is right, it’s called flourescense. One of the diamonds in my ring glows and the other two do not. It supposedly reduces the value of the diamond, but not a lot – and as I’m sure you know you cannot see it outside of a black light.
